Wisconsin Marijuana Advocates Planning State Capitol Lobby Day Jan. 16

State medical cannabis patients and activists are planning a Medical Cannabis Lobby Day on Wed. Jan. 16, 2013 at the State Capitol in Madison.

The Madison and Wisconsin chapters of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), along with Is My Medicine Legal YET? (IMMLY), the Wisconsin medical cannabis advocacy group founded by medical cannabis bill namesake Jacki Rickert, are joining forces to bring advocates to Madison.

NORML has already filed permits for the event. The group hand-delivered the permit application after state officials somehow "lost" a permit application the group had submitted in January 2012 for Governor Scott Walker's 2012 "State of the State" (SOTS) address by both email and the U.S. Postal Service.

Wisconsin medical cannabis legislation - the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA) will have a new lead sponsor next session. Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) will be taking over from Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) who was elected to the U.S. Congress on Nov. 6 to fill the seat held by Tammy Baldwin, elected a U.S. Senator the same day.

The 2013-2014 JRMMA is being updated to reflect the many developments in medical cannabis in the recent past. As in past sessions, the legislation is not expected to be formally introduced until after the state budget is settled mid-year.

Organizers are holding the lobby day early in the session to build on momentum from recent votes in Colorado and Washington to legalize small amounts of cannabis and the passage, by Massachusetts voters of a medical cannabis initiative making that state number 18 plus Washington D.C.

Here is an update from the Field:

Northern Wisconsin NORML representatives are looking for your input.

Please take a moment and consider these questions:

1) Will I travel to Madison to participate in Lobby Day?

2) Can I help bring others to Madison by car pooling?

3) I cannot travel to Madison, but would still like to help in some way, specifically on that Wednesday.

Letting folks know a couple of months out, so that plans can be made, and folks from the far reaches can arrange to attend. January 16th, 2013 will be WI State Capitol Lobby Day in the rotunda (exact times to be announced). Come one, come all. Learn, lobby and discover what is happening for the MMJ efforts in Wisconsin!


We have not received many updates but the times were announced:
“The Lobby Day is set to go from 10 a.m. until 4:30.p.m. Sounds like the Madison Crew will staff an information table, to be located in the first floor rotunda area, to provide information on the issue and help participants find their representatives.

They also say that if you agree that cannabis should be legalized at least for medical use, come to the Capitol Jan. 16. If you cannot make it, urge others to go and call and write your elected officials who need to hear from the new cannabis majority."

There are also planning or training meetings announced for each chapter prior to The State Lobby Day.
