A new front has emerged in lawmakers' battle over marijuana use in the Sunshine State with the introduction of a bill that would encourage and regulate the "cultivation, processing, distribution, manufacturing and sale" of hemp.
The Hemp Industry Development Act would allow the cultivation of low-THC hemp "to promote economic development and job growth." Growers would be required to register with the state and submit a statement that the seeds contain low levels of THC.
The grower would also be required to provide the location and acreage of hemp crops and allow crops to be inspected and tested during "growing season, harvest, storage, processing, manufacturing and distribution."
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, also protects growers who comply with the law from from criminal prosecution.
Marijuana and hemp come from the same plant. However, hemp refers to a fast-growing, lower THC variety of the cannabis plant that is used to make textiles, oil, wax, resin, rope, cloth, pulp, paper, and fuel.
According to Rehwinkel Vasilinda's bill, hemp is a "viable, environmentally sound crop that requires less irrigation, fewer pesticides and fewer refinery processes than alternative materials."
