Wichita - Marijuana Petition Verification Nearly Finished

The campaign to lower the penalties for marijuana in Wichita could take another step forward Friday. The verification of petition signatures is expected to end. The Sedgwick County Elections Office has been slowed by the task of overseeing advance voting. Supporters of lower fines for marijuana possession turned in their petitions last week. The group Kansas for Change claimed to have 5,800 signatures. Only about 2,900 need to be proven valid.

Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman says it's a careful process. "We go through the petitions one time through. Then any signatures or questions that we had, we then go back through and have a second person look at, to be sure before we reject a signature that we have more than one person agree with that." If everything is verified, the petitions then go to the election clerk - and on from there to City Council. But City Manager Robert Layton has hinted there might be wording problems which disqualify the drive. He has yet to explain what he means by that.
