The Arcata City Council voted on a plan to allow medical marijuana processing centers in the city, but they would be located in a specially designated area.

On Wednesday night during their regular meeting, the council approved the proposal, directing city staff to draft land use code regulations for the designated business area.

Arcata currently has two medical marijuana dispensaries, where cardholders can buy cannabis. Arcata Community Development Director Larry Oetker explained that this proposed zone will be different.

"My goal is to get serious businesses together that are going to operate within the rules and that we're going to essentially grow a new industry in Arcata," Oetker said.

The businesses will be able to grow medical marijuana and then use it in products to be distributed. In the proposed plan, businesses will not be able to make direct sales to customers.

The area proposed for the zone is on West End road by Highway 299.
