The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) plans to open the country's first-ever marijuana-centric museum exhibition this April.

"Altered State: Marijuana and California" will explore many uses of cannabis as well as changing public attitudes and other related issues, according to an OMCA press release.

The exhibit is "designed as a catalyst for conversation and reflection," according to OMCA, and will provide museum visitors the opportunity to "add their voices to the evolving conversation."

"California is on the verge of making important decisions around marijuana that will impact people living in this state," Kelly McKinley, director of the OMCA Lab. "OMCA is a place where people can come together to learn, question and add their voice to the different points of view around this topic at a very critical time in public decision making."

New Roles For Today's Museums

OMCA says this exhibit showcases the role museums can play in building awareness and starting dialogues around import community issues.

"The roles of museums in today's world are shifting," OMCA Director Lori Fogarty said through a release. "At OMCA, we aim to inspire Californians to create a more vibrant future for themselves and their communities. As part of this, we are dedicated to being a place where people can come learn about complex topics and, more importantly, add their voices and stories to the dialogue. This exhibition is proof of that in action."

"Altered State: Marijuana in California" is set to run at OMCA from April through November 2016.
