White Springs - The White Springs Town Council voted to allow Town Attorney Meagan Standard to look into a possible ordinance to control medical marijuana clinics within White Springs in light of Amendment 2.
Florida voters will vote on Amendment 2 in November. If approved, it will allow medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating medical conditions as determined by a licensed Florida physician.
Bret Berlin of Igniting Florida spoke to the council. Berlin represents San Felasco Nurseries, which is a Gainesville-based dispensing organization authorized to grow medical marijuana in Florida.
"We're concerned about the constitutional amendment in the state of Florida that's on the Nov. 8 ballot regarding medical marijuana," Berlin said. "We're concerned because assuming that passes in Nov. 8, as the polling indicates that it will, it will open the door to allow dispensaries to open up across from our schools, parks and there are really no state controls on where dispensaries can be or how they are to be managed by the government. It is up to cities and counties to do that at the local level."
Berlin asked the council to consider passing an ordinance to take control of where dispensaries can be within the town limits.
He added things to consider are how far dispensaries should be from schools, who is allowed to operate the dispensaries and should the dispensaries operate as a business or should they apply for a license to operate in White Springs.
The council requested Town Attorney Meagan Standard provide an ordinance for consideration.
