End Federal Prohibition of Medical Marijuana

Move Med Mj out of CSA schedule 1

TEXT of Congressman Letter

Dear Congresswoman Sinema (D- Az 9th District):

In November 2012, more than 55 percent of voters in both Colorado and Washington State decided it was time to end the wasteful policy of federal marijuana prohibition.

With their votes, they declared that it no longer makes sense to punish adults who choose to use medical marijuana, a substance less harmful than alcohol.

They also strongly embraced the argument that society would be better off with medical marijuana sold in state-licensed and regulated stores, rather than in a criminal market by gangs and cartels.

They agreed that their communities would collectively benefit from tax revenues generated from the legal sale of medical marijuana.

It is time to enact a similar policy change at the federal level.

Medical Marijuana prohibition needs to be placed on the historical scrap heap, along with alcohol prohibition.

Each one caused far more harm than it prevented.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) has introduced a bill to treat marijuana like alcohol under federal law.

Rep. Polis's bill, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2013 (H.R. 499), would remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and shift federal oversight of marijuana from the Drug Enforcement Administration to what would become the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, Firearms and Explosives.

The time has come to end medical marijuana prohibition.

I hope that you will sponsor this bill to regulate medical marijuana like alcohol on the federal level.

Thank you,
