Apache Junction police said today officers arrested a man after responding to a tip that he had a large marijuana plant growing outside his apartment.
According to reports, police arrived at the apartment of Jesse Burke in the 1600 block of South Winchester Road last Wednesday and questioned Burke about the plants, but he denied any knowledge, stating "the plants were already there when he moved in."
The marijuana plant, which was pulled from the ground and seized as evidence, was 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighed almost 13 pounds. Two additional plants were found growing nearby in coffee cans. advertisement
After police found a warrant for his arrest in New Mexico, a search warrant was obtained and they found more drugs and paraphernalia inside the apartment.
"This was a major deal, this guy had a lot of processing equipment, scales, he had marijuana drying inside, he had a warrant for his arrest, you know this is great work," said Cmd. Jay Swart, a police spokesman.
Officers found "substantial amounts of * and marijuana," meth and marijuana pipes and bongs, as well as scales and additional marijuana drying out, according to the report.
Swart there is "no question" it was Burke's intent to distribute, and booked him on possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana to sell and transport, possession of * and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The live plants pulled were seized evidence and Swart said will be "photographed and maintained until the county attorney gives direction on it."
Once the pot plants are no longer needed for the case, Swart said they will be taken to a facility near Superior to be burned.
