Jamaica - A quantity of ganja valuing more than $8.2 million was seized and destroyed by the police in St Catherine yesterday. The police say officers attached to the Marine Division seized more than 3,285 pounds of compressed ganja while on patrol in Hellshire Pond, St Catherine. They say that about 12:30 p.m., the officers were conducting patrol duties in the area, when they observed two men aboard a 28 foot canoe, laden with cargo that aroused the suspicion of the lawmen. Upon their approach, the men escaped into nearby mangroves leaving the canoe with the cargo on board. A search of the vessel revealed several bags and buckets of the drug along with three 45 gallon drums of gasolene. The ganja has an estimated street value $8,212,500.
