A MOTHER and her teenage daughter have been arrested after officers seized the largest ever haul of cannabis anyone has attempted to smuggle through Birmingham Airport. A whopping 47 kilos of compressed cannabis resin was found hidden inside three bags being brought into the country from Jamaica.

The drugs were estimated to be worth £130,000 on the streets. They were seized by officers from the newlyformed UK Border Agency. A spokesman said the seizure was believed to be the largest haul of cannabis through the city's airport.

A 41-year-old woman and her 18-year-old daughter, both from London, were arrested on suspicion of smuggling when they arrived on a flight from Montego Bay on Tuesday. Officers from HM Revenue and Customs are now investigating. The two women have been summoned to appear at Solihull Magistrates Court on July 17.

* An Austrian national has been jailed for 18 months for attempting to smuggle almost six kilos of cannabis through Birmingham International Airport.
Klaus Grunseis, aged 45, was detained after he arrived on a flight from Thailand travelling via Delhi to Zurich then onto Birmingham in March.

Customs officers searched his luggage and following an x-ray found the drugs, worth an estimated £12,000 on the streets, concealed in the lining of his two suitcases. Grunseis, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to drug offences, and a Confiscation Order has been applied for.
