Fairbanks - Legally purchasable marijuana is expected to start hitting store shelves in Alaska on Saturday.
Herbal Outfitters, in Valdez, is preparing to open at "high noon" on Saturday, the store announced on social media, while two state-approved retail stores in Fairbanks are having their final inspections in the coming days and are making plans to open next week.
A third Fairbanks store is about a month away from its grand opening, the owner says, while growers this week have started to send product to Anchorage for testing.
"We are thrilled to death to tell you the truth," said Cary Carrigan, executive director of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association. "I think we are seeing the very start of a very exciting time for the state of Alaska recreationally, financially and medically."
The two Fairbanks stores on the eve of opening are the Fox Avenue pot grower/retailer Pakalolo Supply Co. and Frozen Budz on south Peger Road.
"We plan on opening next week," Pakalolo announced in an Oct. 24 Tweet.
The business also announced that its product is undergoing testing.
Frozen Budz is having a final inspection by the state Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office on Monday, co-owner Destiny Neade stated in a text message.
She said she is purchasing marijuana from a local grower whose product is currently in the testing phase. The anticipated turnaround time for marijuana testing is about three days.
"We've decided to open with a limited product line of Alaska-grown buds," Neade wrote.
The cannabis company is working through some final product manufacturing approvals and hopes to eventually specialize in marijuana edibles.
Frozen Budz is one of three Fairbanks cannabis businesses under review by the Alaska Marijuana Control Board, which meets today in Anchorage to go over licensing applications and proposed regulations, including regulations for on-site consumption.
A moratorium on on-site consumption in the Fairbanks North Star Borough outside of city limits expires on Nov. 11.
The control board will review licensing applications for a marijuana grow on Ester Dome Road and a retail store on Davis Road.
Daniel Peters is hoping GoodSinse will be the third cannabis store to open in Fairbanks. Peters said he still needs to complete the review process at the City of Fairbanks. He is aiming for a late November opening.
"It's a dream come true when it happens," Peters said. "We've been nothing but spending money. I am looking forward to making a little. That would be lovely."
Mike Emers of Rosie Creek Farm said he harvested his crop last month and is preparing for the testing phase. He has buyers lined up, though he declined to name them.
If all goes well, Emers is hoping that weed from Rosie Creek Farm hits store shelves by the end of next week. Product from Rosie Creek Farm will likely be available across the state, the grower said.
"It's a big week for the industry," Emers said.
