St. Clair Shores in Michigan joins many others in freezing medical marijuana businesses from operating within city limits. The six month moratorium began August 16th so that the mayor and other officials can evaluate what to do with Michigan's new medical marijuana statute.
"This has been a topic in many communities throughout Michigan," says Mayor Robert Hison. "There are many questions that no only we have, but I also know that other cities have. We should be evaluating, not deciding."

A ballot initiative creating medical marijuana as a right in Michigan was passed by voters in the November, 2008 elections. Since then, cities and communities have struggled to understand what to do with the new law. Most have opted to put moratoriums or outright bans on it at the local level.
Most are hoping the State Legislature will make their decisions for them. The legislature is expected to take up amendments and clarifications to Michigan's medical marijuana laws. This could radically change how the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, passed by a popular vote of the people, looks and works.
Meanwhile, patients and their caregivers are left in the lurch with no way to do anything but obtain medical marijuana licenses. Businesses are also finding themselves in a bind when their plans are derailed by sudden moratoriums that effectively close them down.
Meanwhile, knee-jerk reactions from school teachers and politicians pander to emotional outbursts and ignore both the law and science.
