The Arkansas Department of Health will start accepting applications for medical marijuana cards on June 30, officials say.
The first step is for patients with qualifying medical conditions to get an Arkansas Department of Health medical marijuana physician written certification. Those forms will be available on June 23, a spokeswoman for the department said. They'll be available on the department's website.
Once a physician signs that form, patients can register online for their medical marijuana card. Anyone who lacks internet access can request a paper form be mailed to them by calling 501-682-4982.
The cards will be good for one year, according to the Arkansas Department of health. Officials said they anticipate cards being available roughly one month before dispensaries start selling the drug.
A spokeswoman for the health department said it anticipates dispensaries being ready for sales later this year or in early 2018.
If the cards are issued any earlier before the drug goes on sale, that'd be wasted time seeing as they're only good for a year, the spokeswoman said.
So long as a physician continues to certify a patient's need for medical marijuana, the cards can continually be renewed every year, according to the department.
