A dozen people have been charged in a $4-million marijuana ring that delivered its goods via bicycle messenger, federal authorities said.

Prosecutors contend that the drug ring sold more than 220 pounds of marijuana between January 1999 and November 2003, grossing about $1-million a year, and used a pager service to dispatch bicycle couriers to deliver the drugs.

Buyers would use the pager service, using a personal identification number, to contact a member of the ring, authorities said in an indictment unsealed Wednesday. A dispatcher would return the call, take the order and send a messenger on bicycle to deliver the drugs and collect the money, authorities said.

Undercover agents received some of the marijuana deliveries from June 2003 to November 2003, prosecutors said.
