A WAGGA mum has called on the NSW government to immediately legalise medical marijuana after Victoria became the first state to decriminalise the drug.
Lizzie Macquarie has pleaded with Premier Baird to mimic the historic decision by the Victorian parliament on Tuesday to legalise the manufacture, supply and access to safe and high quality cannabis.
Ms Macquarie's daughter Lillian, 9, is struck down by up to 60 seizures a day and can't go outside to play with her friends, on account of chronic epilepsy.
"I will try anything to give Lillian some sort of childhood," Ms Macquarie said.
"She wants to be like the other kids she goes to school with, but she's not allowed to roam freely in the playground and she spends lunchtime in the library.
"We're not sure if it's the epilepsy or the medication she's been taking twice a day for years, but she has a shocking short-term memory and we often have to explain to her why she has to miss out.
"The man-made drugs aren't fixing her condition and they must be taking their toll on her kidneys, liver and brain, so we may as well give marijuana a try."
Ms Macquarie was buoyed by the Victorian government's commitment to prioritise children with severe epilepsy when specially formulated cannabis oil becomes available early next year.
Medical cannabis campaigner Lucy Haslam will cultivate the herb as soon as the NSW government allows.
"Medical cannabis works particularly well for children with epilepsy who haven't responded to other medication," she said.
"It's useful for lots of other neurological issues from Alzheimer's to multiple sclerosis and head trauma.
"The Premier has been very proactive and will go down the same route as Victoria from November 1, when the office of drug control in the federal department of health issues its regulations."
Mrs Haslam travelled with Mr Baird earlier this month to inspect the first and largest supplier of medical cannabis in Israel.
