Ballasts?

Are ballasts easy to set up? I would like to have the ballast outside of my closet to control heat and I was also wondering if that would be a problem since the ballast would be about 6-7ft. (at the most) from the light itself. I would really like to get an hps but my lack of ballast knowledge is the only thing stopping me.

If the wire going to the bulb is not long enough just replace it with some 14/2 house wire is good enough.
