Only two medical marijuana dispensaries can open in the city under rules that won unanimous approval Wednesday.

Those two treatment centers will have to find a location in north-central Hollywood, far from the beach and downtown.

Florida voters on Nov. 8 approved medical marijuana to treat cancer, HIV, multiple sclerosis and other debilitating conditions.

Legislators have yet to create statewide guidelines regulating the industry and are expected to finalize rules this year.

In recent months, several cities have imposed moratoriums on marijuana dispensaries, including Sunrise, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Boca Raton and Delray Beach.

Like Hollywood, Wilton Manors has passed rules imposing limits on where the dispensaries can go.

Under the rules approved Wednesday, dispensaries in Hollywood must be at least 1,000 feet from day-care centers, places of worship, public parks and schools and at least 500 feet from pain clinics, social service facilities, substance abuse centers and pharmacies that are less than 9,000 square feet.

Hollywood Commissioner Dick Blattner wanted to know whether Hollywood could tweak the ordinance to allow more dispensaries.

City Attorney Jeff Sheffel said commissioners could allow more as the need arises.

Hollywood won't process applications until state officials draft regulations for the industry, Sheffel said.
