Capay Valley residents will be speaking about their concerns with medical marijuana at an upcoming advisory meeting, further shaping the final county ordinance to be released later this year.

Guinda's Grange Hall will host the Capay Valley Citizens Advisory Committee's session set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, to discuss outdoor medical marijuana cultivation and how it will regulated in Yolo County.

Throughout the process of creating the county's medical marijuana ordinance, the needs of local residents have remained paramount in the minds of county officials. As such, according to Ag Commissioner John Young, the meeting will likely result in additional restrictions being added.

"The concerns are that properties in the Capay Valley are being purchased at a rapid rate, driving up property values and making it even more difficult for small farmers to farm," explained Young.

Those that have communicated with the commissioner, thus far, have asked that medical marijuana grows be limited in size to less than a half acre, only a limited number of licenses be issued for the county, and that grows be spread out geographically.

Additionally, they have asked that it be a requirement for all grow operators to be county residents and that those with criminal records not be allowed to participate.

A public comment period will be held at the beginning of the committee meeting so that others may share their thoughts on the issue as well.

The upcoming meet is the latest in a series of outreach efforts by the county to include, educate, and learn from local residents as a once illegal industry gains acceptance across the country.

In April, Young organized a meeting at Norton Hall in Woodland, alongside the Yolo Ag & Food Alliance, to get input from medical marijuana patients, growers, and local residents. Since then, Young has organized subsequent meetings at such places as Woodland's Lil' Shop of Growers to get people up to speed on the interim ordinance.

The final ordinance will not be completed until the end of the year, after the results of the November election are in and the fate of recreational marijuana is revealed.
