Calgary police have suspended one of their own after an officer was accused of stealing the marijuana he seized while on duty.

An investigation was launched in November 2015 after the anti-corruption unit received a tip saying a constable may have seized marijuana while on duty, but then failed to dispose of it according to procedure.

Robert Cumming, 43, was arrested June 3 and charged with breach of trust, theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance.

His next court date is set for July 15.

Cumming was suspended from duty and police said a decision is now being made whether he will be paid.

An investigation by the professional standards section will begin once the criminal process is complete.
