The Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association has a new face at its helm.
The CMCIA board of directors has appointed Colette Rivet as the new executive director of the association.
Rivet comes from a post as executive director of Resident Doctors of Canada to take up the position. Rivet has a background in management roles at other health organizations, including BioTalent Canada, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Canadian Blood Agency.
The CMCIA's last executive director, Neil Belot, stepped down in September last year to work for the medical marijuana company Aurora Cannabis Enterprises.
"We are very pleased to welcome Colette to CMCIA at a pivotal time for the medical cannabis industry, and for medical cannabis patients," Marc Wayne, the CMCIA Board Chair, said in a release.
Rivet takes on the job at a key time as the Liberal government moves to examine how it will legalize recreational marijuana.
Her association is looking to present to the federal-provincial-territorial task force which will examine legalization.
"This would be an ideal situation for us to assist the government with this," Rivet said, on speaking about how to address public health aspects of inspection and quality control regulation.
"It doesn't make any sense to provide that kind of quality product just to patients...the association really wants to keep that aspect of public safety high in the forefront of everybody's minds."
She says they also have boosting support for insurance reimbursements for medical marijuana as a top priority this year and to "try to make it as acceptable as other drugs in the market."
The association's spokesperson, Cam Battley, also said they want the Liberal government to "bring clarity" as soon as possible on what the government plans to do about illegal marijuana dispensaries, which have been cropping up across Canada.
Meanwhile, the medical marijuana industry has begun moving toward other forms of consumption for patients with edibles – such as with Tuesday's announcement that CanniMed has been approved to sell three types of edible cannabis oils. The Supreme Court ruled last year allowing medical marijuana to be sold in all forms.
The organization says it represents over half of the producers licensed under Health Canada's Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations.
