Montreal – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the current law governing marijuana stands until new legislation is ratified.

Cannabis activists opened six shops in Montreal on Thursday in defiance of the current law and said they are considering opening another in Trudeau"s riding in the city.

Longtime cannabis advocate Marc Emery said Trudeau would be as much of a criminal as them if they were arrested.

The prime minister didn"t specifically address that point when asked about it at a news conference in Montreal today.

He did say the government is moving "properly and responsibly" to legalize marijuana but that current laws need to be respected.

Trudeau says it is important to proceed with new legislation in order to protect Canadian children and eliminate the influence of criminal elements that profit from the sale of cannabis.
