Pueblo, Colo. - The city of Pueblo has decided retail marijuana shops will be allowed within city limits.
On Monday, the Pueblo City Council took up the discussion of implementing voter's wishes.
Council was presented plans from 2015, and in more than an hour of discussion on regulations and zoning for the retail marijuana shops, led to minor changes of the 2015 plan.
"Council wants to move forward as quickly as possible to implement retail marijuana stores within the city of Pueblo," City Council President Steve Nawrocki said.
Right now, many regulations remain the same. Eight stores will be allowed in Pueblo, four on the north side of the Arkansas River and four to the south.
But where those stores are allowed is limited to only the dark yellow spots on this map.
"Right now, our medical marijuana stores have to be 250 feet away (from homes). They want to increase that to 300 feet for the retail marijuana stores," city of Pueblo senior planner Kelly Grisham said.
Stores will also have to be 500 feet away from hospitals and 1000 feet away from schools.
"It actually shrinks it down quite a bit, because there are so many schools, so many offices, charter schools, colleges, high schools, online academies, (that) also have to meet the 1000- foot buffer," Grisham said.
A new application piece has also been added, as potential stores will have to petition neighbors.
"So the neighbors can be aware of what's happening and also so they can have an input on the stores they are going to be around them," Grisham said.
But more work still needs to be done before retail marijuana stores are a reality.
"We're ready to implement it. We will have the most fair process in place," Nawrocki said.
A first reading of the resolution is scheduled for Dec. 12 and a final reading and approval for the resolution is set for Dec. 27.
Right now, licenses won't be awarded until April or May 2017.
