Columbia County Marijuana Dispensary Will not Reopen

Staypuff Organics' owners have no plans on reopening what was Columbia County's only marijuana dispensary.

Co-owner Ryan Neveau, 23, says he won't open another dispensary until rules regarding medical marijuana are made less hazy.

"I'm not going to open another one for it to close again," said Neveau, adding that owners invested about $20,000 on cameras, safes, display cases and other equipment for the dispensary.

Dispensary owners made the decision to close after three months of operation when they received a letter from the U.S. Attorney General's office threatening seizure of inventory and prosecution. According to Neveau, Staypuff had about 200 members when the shop was shuttered in July.

Oregon state law allows marijuana use by patients with doctor-prescribed Oregon Medical Marijuana Program cards. Cardholders are allowed to grow their own plants or to obtain marijuana from registered growers.

U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton put Oregon dispensaries on notice in June with a tersely worded letter.

"The sale of marijuana for any purpose – including as medicine – violates both Federal and Oregon law and will not be tolerated," the letter read. "People and businesses that conduct sales of marijuana face the risk of prosecution, civil enforcement action and seizure of assets."

The 1998 Oregon Medical Marijuana Act, approved by state voters, does not stop law-enforcement agencies from seizing plants or protect growers from criminal prosecution.
