Company Eyes Medical Marijuana Dispensary In New York

A Long Island-based company say it will apply for one of five medical marijuana licenses in New York - and look to put one of the dispensaries on Alexander Street in Rochester across from the former Genesee Hospital.

PalliaTech, a palliative care company, said that, if approved by the state, it would locate dispensaries in Brooklyn, Newburgh, Rochester and Utica.

Alexander Street is a busy commercial and residential corridor - with medical facilities on one side and bars and restaurants on the other side.

“These locations were selected with the goal of covering as much ground as possible in New York state so that we can provide thousands of patients in need of palliative relief with convenient access to our products,” said Richard Taney, PalliaTech’s president, said in statement.

The deadline to apply for the licenses is tomorrow, and there's been a flurry of companies announcing plans to apply for the licenses.

There's at least four Rochester-area companies planning to bid for the licenses, which the state Health Department expects to award this summer.

The goal is to have the program up and running by January 1 after the state last year approved medical marijuana for severely ill patients in non-smokeable forms. Medical marijuana advocates, though, are skeptical that the tight deadlines could be met.

In PalliaTech’s proposal, its four dispensaries would be within a two-hour drive of most of the state, the company said. They expect at least 15 employees at each site.
