Council Approves Rules Surrounding Medical Marijuana

City Council has voted to go ahead with rules to limit where medical marijuana counselling centres can set up.

The city is trying to prevent the proliferation of these centres, as has happened in Toronto and Vancouver, and has come up with some land use regulations.

The rules mean a development permit will be needed to open a counselling centre, and nearby residents will be given a chance to challenge the location.

The centres cannot be within 150 meters of a school, or within 300 metres of another counselling centre.

Councillor Shane Keating says the rules and regulations are a good starting point and there could be changes made if necessary.

"If it gets more constrictive in the future or we don't see a need for change in the future, than maybe we can say we've over-regulated. But today, it's simply saying, lets start here, lets adjust as we move on in the future"

But three councillors voted against the motion, including Evan Woolley.

"I understand the challenges in Vancouver, it's just bad for the street, it's bad for businesses. Why things got out of control in Toronto, Vancouver and other cities was because their police forces made a decision not to enforce. I don't know that you need direction from council to continue to enforce the fact that marijuana is still illegal."

Councillors says this is a temporary fix considering the federal government's plans to decriminalize and regulate marijuana.
