The Ypsilanti City Council will be voting Tuesday night whether to extend its moratorium on medical marijuana.

If approved, the emergency ordinance would extend the temporary ban on the issuance of permits to sell or dispense medical marijuana for 60 days after the moratorium expires.

The current 90-day suspension, which was enacted Dec. 7, is set to end in February.

City staff are now in the process of implementing an ordinance for licensing procedures in accordance with the regulation of medical marijuana.

If the present moratorium were to expire, it would allow a timeframe where it would not be regulated.

An emergency ordinance was requested because it takes effect immediately whereas a normal ordinance is effective 30 days after the second reading is approved.

The Michigan Medical Marihuana Act was approved in 2008 by more than 63 percent of the state's voters.
