Europeans Smoke More Marijuana Than Tobacco

Cannabis is the drug of choice for Europeans. Almost 20 million adults have partaken of the drug in the past year, 15 million of them aged 15 to 34 years.

More generally, the EU drugs agency estimates that 1% of Europe's population smoke marijuana daily.

The agency's annual report examines the dynamics and dimensions of drug use in the EU.

Countries where consumption of hemp is increasing include Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Norway and Sweden.

But use is stable or declining in Germany, Spain and the UK.

The agency says that serious health emergencies associated with marijuana use are rare.

However, the more than 130 synthetic cannabinoids identified by the EU authorities come with high-risk health warnings.

The drugs, which are sometimes used as a legal substitute for cannabis, can be very dangerous if not deadly.
