The seizures never seem to stop for 14-year-old Branden, but neither does Branden's mother. Just like she helps her son fight through every epileptic episode, Renee Petro is fighting for the one medicine her son doesn't have access to: cannabis.

"My son, who has failed with all medications should be able to try cannabis," Petro said.

Co-Founder of CannaMoms, Petro was at the UN General Assembly Special Session on International Drug Policy this past week. While the world debated decriminalizing drugs, Petro and her organization continues to focus on legalizing medical marijuana.

"Everyone should have the chance to try this as medicine, in their home and not have to worry about a SWAT Team coming to knock their door down and take their children away," Petro said.

That same government that could imprison her gave CannaMoms a big break this week, granting 501(c)(3) status.

"It's a big deal. Gives us credibility, donors a tax write off, and we are the first non-profit of our kind to receive the designation," Petro said.

CannaMom's will be hosting fundraisers and pushing for Amendment 2 to pass in Florida, which would legalize medical marijuana. The organization will also assist families who are seeking cannabis treatments, funding to move to states where medical marijuana is legal.

"My son and the children of these people should not have to wait this long to alleviate their pain and suffering," Petro said.
