Palm Beach County is moving forward with a temporary ban on medical marijuana dispensaries that aims to give state legislators time to craft regulations for the industry.

Commissioners gave initial approval Thursday to a one-year moratorium on issuing permits for medical pot operations.

The intent of the delay is to craft the best rules possible – not keep medical marijuana out of the hands of patients, Commissioner Steven Abrams said.

"We all want to see this implemented as quickly as possible," he said.

Nearly 75 percent of Palm Beach County voters in November supported Amendment 2, which authorized the use of medical marijuana in Florida.

It's possible the moratorium could be lifted sooner if the state Legislature acts quickly, Abrams said.

Local governments across the state have imposed moratoriums, including the cities of Delray Beach and Boca Raton.

Commissioner Mary Lou Berger said she didn't want the board to pass rules for the sale of medical marijuana that could conflict with those developed by the state.

"It's an important issue, and we all need to get it right," she said.

The moratorium is set for final approval on Feb. 23.
