Fresno County Moratorium On New Pot Dispensaries

Fresno County supervisors are banning any new medical marijuana dispensaries, while officials draft regulations for existing ones.

The Board of Supervisors approved the moratorium Tuesday to address the growing number of businesses in unincorporated parts of the county after the city of Fresno moved to ban them last year.

At least 15 dispensaries are currently operating.

County officials say some of those are not properly zoned and may move to shut them down.

Sheriff Margaret Mims supported the moratorium, saying the dispensaries attract crime.

The emergency ordinance remains in effect for 45 days. County officials say they plan to ask the board to extend the measure because they'll need more time to draft regulations.
