Georgetown, DE Holds Public Hearing On Possible Medical Marijuana Center

Entrepreneur's with an eye on medical marijuana have expressed interest in opening up a medical marijuana dispensary, or compassion center, in Georgetown. It's been a slow road for the medical marijuana business in the First State. Just last summer was the first compassion center to open in Delaware, and it's in Wilmington. This means if you're a Delawarean with a prescription for marijuana, it takes a trip to New Castle County to get your prescription filled.

While Kent and Sussex counties may be dispensary deserts for patients, for entrepreneurs they are a potential oasis. Georgetown mayor Bill West says at least one entrepreneur has expressed interest in setting up shop in Georgetown, so they are preparing accordingly. He wants the town to be "a nice place to do business, and a nice place to live at the same time".

Still, some residents are concerned that the potential dispensary, which by law has to be classified as a "compassion center" might confuse people who drive and walk by it, and they might not know what it actually is. So one concerned resident says that the town has a responsibility to be transparent.

Mayor West agrees, and he decided to set up a committee of local officials and residents to make sure those concerns are addressed. Whether Georgetown residents see compassion centers as a capitalist enterprise, compassionate care, or somewhere in between, Mayor West says what's most important is that they're ready.
