Hempfest Gives Up Effort For Third Day

The organizers of Hempfest, the annual pro marijuana celebration along Seattle's waterfront, have decided to stop fighting City Hall. This year, anyway.

Hempfest wanted to hold a three-day event this summer instead of the usual two days, but the City denied a permit for the extra time. Organizers filed an appeal on June 24, but on Monday said they were abandoning their effort for the third day, saying they were unlikley to succeed.

The festival is planned for Aug. 21-22 in Myrtle Edwards Park. Organizers had said they wanted another day for public safety reasons, citing the large numbers of people who attend their event.

Vivian McPeak, Hempfest executive director, said the group would try again for three days next year.

"We are going to file our permit early and make sure that the City acts within the legally prescribed timeline to issue or deny our application. This will leave us plenty of time to deal with any unforeseen issues," McPeak said in a statement.
