A Shelbyville medical cannabis clinic that opened in February has seen an uptick in patients, according to its co-owner.

"The Shelbyville clinic has been really, really great," said Eric Sweatt, co-owner of the clinic. "We've helped a lot of people from the surrounding areas – some people are driving two and three hours to get here. We're setting up more and more appointments."

Medical Cannabis Outreach's Medical Marijuana Pain Management & Wellness Clinic opened at 480 S. Heinlein Drive to help people get medical cannabis cards. The business does not grow or sell medical marijuana. While patient numbers are growing, Sweatt said, the clinic is still operating on an appointment-only basis for now.

"We open once every two or three weeks," he said.

Sweatt said the typical Shelbyville patient is between 40 and 70 years old, though younger groups have been helped as well. The most common condition patients seek treatment for is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. About a quarter of the PTSD sufferers are military veterans, Sweatt said, while the rest developed the condition as civilians – from car crashes, child abuse, or other intense experiences.

"Medical cannabis allows them to sleep," he said. "And it doesn't just make a patient's life better, it makes the whole family's life better."

The state requires a person seeking a medical cannabis card to have a physician approve that they have a qualifying condition. Sweatt said many doctors in the area decline to make such an approval, but they have been referring patients to Medical Cannabis Outreach. The Shelbyville clinic has "cannabis-friendly" physicians willing to verify qualifying conditions.

People can set up an appointment at 309-338-8900 and find more information at medicalcannabisoutreach.com.

Sweatt said there shouldn't be any stigma against those that seek the clinic's help.

"These are not stoners," he said. "These are neighbors, friends, and church people. This is a medicine. I think people are starting to listen and take note."
