The Independent Alliance is to exercise their right to a free vote on proposed legislation that would allow for cannabis for medicinal purposes.
The bill proposed by AAA-People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny will be debated in the Dáil on Thursday but there will not be a vote until next week.
The Alliance said they were entitled to the free vote because this was an issue not agreed or included in the Programme for Government.
It is understood that there was no tension in cabinet about the Independent Alliance's position.
The cabinet did not adopt a position on the bill today but the Minister for Health Simon Harris is said to have concerns about it.
