Joplin NORML will celebrate its third anniversary with a concert aimed at raising awareness and funds for the local group. The event will take place from 9 p.m. until close on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at The Kitchen Pass, 1212 S. Joplin Ave. Admission to the event is $6.00 and attendees must be over 21 years of age.

Bands scheduled to perform are Jah Roots, McGill and One Shade of Grey. A gift certificate donated by Punkteur Tattoo's (1312 S Joplin Ave) and custom artwork donated by Camzilla Industries, both valued at $200, will be raffled off. President Kelly Maddy is scheduled to give the commemorative speech.

This week the FBI released its 2007 annual report on crime in the US. Once again, the number of people arrested for marijuana has gone up. Of the 872,721 Americans that were arrested 89% or 775,138 were for simple possession - not buying, selling, trafficking, or manufacture (growing). This is the largest number of annual arrests for cannabis ever recorded by the FBI. They now comprise nearly 47.5 percent of all drug arrests in the United States.

A cannabis consumer is arrested every 37 seconds in America. These arrests, that dispel the myth that law enforcement doesn't target minor marijuana offenders, are considered by many as a waste of precious law enforcement resources that could be better spent on more serious and violent crime.
