Two New Zealanders arrested in India after allegedly being caught with cannabis have declined help from New Zealand diplomats in the country.
The pair, a man and a woman, were arrested in Bhuntar, an area well-known for marijuana cultivation.
Authorities allege the New Zealanders were carrying 96 grams of cannabis.
India has strict drug laws, with penalties of up to 10 years jail for people caught with even a few grams of marijuana.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington said New Zealand's High Commission in New Delhi had been informed of the situation and had made contact with local authorities.
Diplomats had made contact with the man and the woman, but they had declined offers of help.
