A Westlake Village attorney was arrested on suspicion of giving marijuana
to her client, who was in court in connection with a drug conviction.

Dawn M. Dunbar was arrested Friday on suspicion of conspiracy and smuggling
drugs into a jail, a Riverside County Jail official said Monday.

Dunbar works for Loftus & Associates law firm in Westlake Village and was
representing 23-year-old Christopher James Salazar of Corona in a Riverside
courtroom. Salazar was appearing on a probation hearing for a drug
conviction and for making false or fraudulent claims.

Before Salazar returned to the jail, a deputy found the marijuana in his
pocket.

"One of the deputies in the courtroom observed the attorney give what
appears to be a packet to the client," said Public Information Officer Sgt.
Shelley Kennedy-Smith. "They tested it and it was found to be marijuana."

Kennedy-Smith said attorneys commonly give documents to their clients while
in court. The client is always searched for contraband before returning to
jail.

Dunbar, 30, posted $25,000 bail Friday. She has been practicing law since
December 2000 and graduated from Loyola Law School, California State Bar
spokeswoman Kathleen Beitiks said. She did not have a disciplinary record.
If convicted, she can face disciplinary action that ranges from a reprimand
to disbarment, Beitiks said.
