United Kingdom - A man who set up a "sophisticated cannabis operation" in Chepstow, potentially yielding tens of thousands of pounds has been jailed. Philip Harris pleaded guilty to one count of producing cannabis and one count of extracting electricity at a five bedroom property where a total of 98 cannabis plants were discovered close to harvest by police.

John Probert, prosecuting, said the "professional" set up had involved, blacked out windows, circuit boards, extractor fans and a timing system, at the home which Harris been renting off a friend for the past six months. The court heard Harris, whose address was given as Fidlas Road, Llanishen, Cardiff, was arrested on September 13 after officers discovered electricity was being trailed up the stairs to aid the drug production process.

Defending the 35-year-old, Harry Baker, said: "Obviously his culpability is high but he was very candid in his interview admissions, refreshingly so you might think. "He has never done anything like this before and was previously in good work." Judge Niclas Parry sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment for the production of the drugs, and six months for the electricity charge, to be served concurrently. Mr Parry said: "You have been an industrious man but this was a sophisticated and planned operation, to make substantial financial gain.

"These cannabis factories are far too common and the public are increasingly concerned about them. "There was the potential to produce a high yield which would have generated, in your estimation, tens of thousands of pounds." Harris was ordered to pay a surcharge of £100. An order for the forfeiture and destruction of the paraphernalia was also made.
