UK - A Chinese man has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for running a cannabis factory on a housing estate in Falkirk.

Jing Yong Wei, 20, was found guilty of producing the drug at Tiree Place in Hallgen.

Police raided the house in February after a tip-off and found 200 cannabis plants worth an estimated £110,000.

Sheriff Paul Arthurson said Wei was guilty of producing drugs on an "industrial scale".

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard Wei, an inmate at Polmont Young Offenders Institution, had suffered "a hard life", being orphaned aged 13 before coming to the UK a year later.

But Sheriff Arthurson told him: "You have been convicted by a jury of a very serious offence of the production of drugs on an industrial scale."

Local officers linked up with drugs squad detectives in the raid on the house.

PC Paul Salmond, community officer for Hallglen, said: "This operation came as a result of information from the public.

"I'd like to thank them for their assistance."

In 2009, Central Scotland Police raided six cannabis factories producing plants worth more £1m.
