Man Turned To Cannabis To Relieve His Pain

A man racked by pain turned to growing cannabis after prescribed medication failed to relieve his condition, Fort William Sheriff Court was told yesterday.

Mordaunt Lane, 41, had tried many alternative remedies from GPs and the internet but none were as effective as cannabis, Sheriff Douglas Small heard.

Lane, of 48 Foyers Road, Kinlochleven, appeared on indictment and admitted producing cannabis at his home between January 1, 2002, and February 11, 2008.

Fiscal Alison Wyllie said police received a tip-off suggesting a cannabis factory was operating there.

Suspicions heightened when a package, believed to contain controlled drugs, was delivered to the house for someone other than Lane.

When officers went to the house, the smell alerted them to the fact that cannabis was being cultivated there.

Ms Wyllie told the court a total of 38 plants were found in a cupboard and a bedroom, where special lighting was costing £30 a week.

She said the Crown accepted there was no cannabis factory, nor were plants being cultivated to supply the drug to others.

Mordaunt said he smoked up to three grammes a day to ease a seven-year leg and back sciatica condition.

He had taken cannabis for pain relief since 2002, and had grown his own since 2004.

Sheriff Small deferred sentence for six months when a further medical report will be considered.

a wise grandma once said (paraphrase), "Man made precription drugs. God made cannabis. Who do YOU trust?"

People with really bad diabilitating health issues being denied the use of cannabis breaks my heart.

But i think that the (sterotypical comment) rasta-child in dreadlocks with a bad hang nail should be allowed the choice of cannabis. They COULD die from aspirin, but nobody has ever overdosed on cannabis.
