Marijuana Dispensary Coming to The Desert Southwest

Medical marijuana is on the market in Arizona. With Proposition 203 passed, also known as Arizona's Medical Marijuana Act, counties throughout the state are gearing up for marijuana dispensaries, including in the Desert Southwest.

Dave Nash with the City of Yuma says, "The City of Yuma's only role in the medical marijuana dispensary business is to provide reasonable zoning restrictions. So far, what's been proposed to council and will have to be voted on is that they'll be allowed only in zoning districts for general commercial and light industrial."

According to Nash, the city is also responsible for operating hours for the dispensaries, and he says there will be no drive through medical marijuana services. Nash also says within the zoning districts there will be buffer zones.

He says, "Basically they just want to be sure that it is a thousand feet or so away form things like parks, schools, day care, churches, public community centers and that type of thing. We also want to be sure it's away from residential zones." Currently, the city is considering 32nd street for its dispensary roughly between Avenue A and eastern city limits. However, that could change.

Some Yuman's already have an opinion as to where the new dispensary should be. Tony Ramos, a resident of Yuma says, "I would think near medical facilities, and not so much near schools or where the public would reside. You don't want to put that sort of thing in public where a teenager could get involved."

According to city officials Yuma will likely have no more than one dispensary and it could be here by June of this year.
