Tonight, July 16, 2015, the Libertarian Party of Broward County will host marijuana legend, Robert Platshorn, in Hollywood, Florida. Platshorn was freed after serving 30 years in prison (the longest in America) for working in the free market of cannabis distribution. Serving the needs of his customers, Platshorn was arrested for a non-violent crime with no victims. Author of the books Black Tuna Diaries and Greed and Evil, Platshorn is America's longest imprisoned nonviolent marijuana offender. A free man again, he created The Silver Tour (Teaching Seniors the Benefits of Medical Marijuana). He's also a Director of Norml of Florida. Platshorn has received national media attention for his work to legalize the plant.

In a rapidly-changing world, Platshorn finds himself leading the charge in Florida to legalize cannabis (marijuana) for medical or recreational use through his Silver Tour directed at seniors. Seniors are expected to benefit the most from medical cannabis use to alleviate a large number of senior ailments. Platshorn has been working to educate the general public as to the benefits of cannabis, as opposed to the fearmongering and misinformation campaigns. Those misinformation campaigns were successful is stopping legalization in Florida last year when polls were passing 80 percent favorability resulting in only 58 percent of Floridians voting in favor of legalizing wider use of medical marijuana. Florida required 60 percent for passage of the amendment.

Miami-Dade County recently took an important baby-step, making the possession of cannabis a civil offense. Some Broward County Commissioners are confident Broward isn't far behind and Palm Beach County is currently looking into the prospect of decriminalization of possession for small amounts of marijuana. Many states, and most recently Puerto Rico have legalized marijuana either for medical or recreational purposes. Millions of dollars are going into state government coffers after legalization, while other states, like Florida, are spending millions of dollars to keep it illegal.

Libertarians have been on the forefront of this issue wishing Americans the ability to freely trade and grow the plant in the United States. Generally speaking Libertarians feel that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose. Specific to cannabis, Libertarian Party Chair Nicholas Sarwark has said, "The War on Drugs, and particularly marijuana prohibition, has been an abject failure. Throwing people in jail for smoking marijuana is cruel and unusual punishment." The Libertarian Party's 2012 presidential nominee, Gary Johnson, is CEO of a cannabis-related company doing business and being based in the United States.

Cannabis (marijuana) has been proven to have medical benefits and as such, the plant should be rescheduled on both state and federal list of substances. The federal government has even held a patent for over ten years stating its medical benefits.

Complimentary pasta dinner and refreshments will be served and the meeting is free and open to the public. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at The Church of Perpetual Life on McKinley Street in Hollywood, Florida.
