A group working to put a recreational marijuana legalization initiative before Massachusetts voters this November says it has collected more than double the signatures needed to appear on the ballot, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Massachusetts Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol says it will deliver more than 25,000 registered voters' signatures to city and town clerks ahead of a Wednesday deadline, well beyond the minimum 10,792 signatures needed to qualify for November's ballot.
It's pretty standard for ballot initiative organizers to collect more than the minimum threshold of signatures needed to qualify for the ballot in case some signatures are invalidated.
"We are confident we have the signatures needed to qualify for the ballot!" Organizers wrote earlier this June.
The group's initiative would allow adults 21 and older to purchase, possess and grow limited amounts of cannabis for personal use.
The measure would also create a regulatory framework for marijuana cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, testing, taxation and retail sales. The system would closely resemble the way alcohol is regulated in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts is one of a number of states pushing to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes this November.
If it does legalize, Massachusetts would join Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Washington DC, which have all already legalized the drug for adult consumption.
