The Allegany County Medical Marijuana Dispensary in Cumberland received a license to dispense medical marijuana on Wednesday.

Although a license to dispense does not allow them to grow the cannabis on-site, they will be able to outsource the product from a local licensed grower.

In order for a patient to obtain it, they have to register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, then meet with a registered prescriber.

The license granted by the commission is something the co-owner, Dr. Sajal Roy, believes could ease the pain of those fighting illnesses.

"We have lots of patients with seizure disorders, anxiety disorders [and] patients suffering from cancer, where medical cannabis can really, really help them and make their everyday life a lot easier," Dr. Roy said.

Dr. Roy hopes the operation will be up-and-running by the end of next summer.

At full capacity, the plant could employ around 20 more people.
