Medical Marijuana Could Land People In Trouble

Attorney General Gary King says the state Department of Health and its employees could face federal prosecution for implementing New Mexico's new medical marijuana law.

The caution was contained in a letter from his office released today.

King says that if state officials were prosecuted, his office couldn't help because it can't represent state workers on criminal charges.

A Health Department spokeswoman says officials are studying the letter before deciding what to do next.

Health officials asked King to tell them what kind of exposure to federal prosecution they might have from setting up the state program.

New Mexico has legalized the use of medical marijuana by certain patients.

The law provides for state-licensed production and distribution of marijuana.
