Medical Marijuana Supporters Rally At Capitol

A couple hundred medical marijuana supporters rallied against legislation they say hinders what voters intended when they chose to legalize the use of medical marijuana four years ago.

Signs reading "The majority spoke" and "God said use every green herb" poked through the crowd as chants of "Whose house is it? Our house" rang loud and clear as speakers shuffled to the microphone on the Capitol steps.

"If you read (the legislature's) version of the law, if you smoke marijuana or you ingest marijuana, you go to jail and I don't think that's what the people of Michigan expected," said Joe Cain, a member of the National Medical Marijuana Coalition, one of several groups represented at the rally. "It is time for the people to reclaim democracy."

He urged rally-goers to stand together against bills that make arresting patients and caregivers on technicalities easier.

Cindy Aldrich, of Lansing, said she doesn't use medical marijuana but supports it.

"Both alcohol and cigarettes by themselves cause more death than medical marijuana," she said. "Why are they legal?"
