Norton Shores, MI - An ordinance that would prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries from operating in Norton Shores will be up for vote by City Council.

The ordinance, which was officially introduced at the Dec. 6 council meeting, would also establish violation fines for dispensaries that open, despite the ordinance.

Police Chief Jon Gale introduced three options to the council regarding medical marijuana provisioning centers, commonly known as dispensaries, since changes to the Michigan law will go into effect Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Municipalities have to create an ordinance allowing dispensaries to open. If no action is taken by the city government, dispensaries are not able to open up in the area.

The options Gale provided were to take no action, adopt an ordinance allowing dispensaries to operate or adopt an ordinance preventing them from operating and creating a schedule of fees and fines for violations.

Norton Shores City Council came to a decision to draft an ordinance preventing dispensaries from opening, plus setting fees and fines.

Gale said if someone were to go against the ordinance and open a dispensary, the city would have to sue to shut down the business. The fines would reimburse attorney fees instead of using taxpayer dollars.

The council will vote on whether or not to adopt the ordinance at a meeting Friday, Dec. 16.
