The Detroit City Council is expected to vote on a medical pot shop ordinance in the coming weeks.
It would create zoning, licensing, and inspection guidelines for marijuana dispensaries.
The ordinance has been introduced, and is going through the Council's committee process.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he's on board with creating some regulations, and thinks the proposed ordinance at least moves things in the right direction.
"Right now we have nothing to enforce," Duggan said. "These facilities have been popping up in quantities and in locations that we probably don't want, and I'd like to be able to enforce [regulations] in a reasonable way."
It's not clear exactly how many medical pot dispensaries Detroit has, but many residents have complained about them proliferating throughout the city.
Michigan's 2008 Medical Marijuana Act doesn't make the legal status of dispensaries clear, or set up any kind of regulatory structure for medical pot.
Detroit joins a growing list of Michigan cities that has either passed or is considering a local ordinance to set some rules.
