Tucked between Pizza Hut and Liberty Tax Service, an empty storefront in a strip mall in downtown Moorhead will soon become the metro area's first medical marijuana dispensary.

Sometime in August, Minnesota Medical Solutions will open a location at 104 7th St. S., the former site of a Subway, the company said Friday.

"We thought it had good access for patients," MinnMed attorney Ross Hussey said of the site. "It fit the size for what we were trying to go for."

The dispensary will offer marijuana products to patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, seizures, glaucoma and other ailments, according to the state Department of Health.

The business will sell oils, tinctures and pills made from marijuana extract, but the plant form of marijuana will not be sold. Only patients with qualifying conditions, their parents and registered caregivers will be allowed in the store.

MinnMed, based in Otsego, considered a number of sites in Moorhead, but some of them were too close to schools, Hussey said. State law requires dispensaries to be at least 1,000 feet from a school.

At other sites, landlords were hesitant to rent to a medical marijuana outfit. "And that was to be expected. We've run into that before," Hussey said.

MinnMed ultimately found a space at 7th & Main Plaza and signed a lease Friday, said Jim Buus, a co-owner of the plaza.

Buus said it wasn't a hard decision for him and his partners to accept MinnMed as a tenant. "We're very comfortable with them as operators and them as an industry," he said. "This'll be very similar to a pharmacy as far as its activity and its look."

Buus said there are plans to make major improvements to the plaza's exterior. "We know the building is looking a little dated," he said.

Moorhead City Planner Kristie Leshovsky said the dispensary, as long as it meets state licensing requirements, can operate in any part of the city that's zoned commercial or mixed-used.

A state law passed last year lets patients receive medical marijuana, but recreational use remains illegal. MinnMed and LeafLine Labs, based in Cottage Grove, were the two companies approved to run dispensaries in cities across the state, including Moorhead.

"I think (medical marijuana) would be useful to a number of people in our community," said Mayor Del Rae Williams, who supported the new state law. "It's good to have a choice."

MinnMed plans to hold a public forum before opening the Moorhead dispensary so residents here can learn more about the business.
