New Proposal Would Legalize Marijuana In Detroit

There is a new push to legalize marijuana in the city of Detroit, and one group may get the issue put on the November ballot.

Members of the Coalition for a Safer Detroit said their petitions have been certified and they are confident voters will say yes to a proposal to legalize marijuana in the city.

The proposal would allow users to carry up to one ounce of marijuana for personal social use. If passed, the proposal would only become a law within the city of Detroit, but since marijuana would still be illegal within the state of Michigan, you could still be arrested by Michigan State Police.

Tim Beck, a member of the group, believes passing the proposal would give police more time to pursue violent criminals and not bother with someone who wants to get high.

Detroit police said they know about the proposal, but have not seen the language in the paperwork, so they are withholding comment.
